For over 30 years, we have been committed to meeting the needs of our community. While our name might have changed over the years, our commitment to the community has remained the same. We support people to live a healthy life by providing NDIS, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, mental health, after hours and primary care services to the Newcastle & Hunter region through collaboration with our network of trusted health professionals.

Our region

The Hunter Primary Care region is located on the NSW east coast and services the following areas: Central Coast, Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, Maitland, Cessnock, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Dungog, Port Stephens, Mid North Coast, Upper Hunter, Liverpool Plains, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Tamworth, Walcha, Uralla and Armidale.

Our region covers the traditional Aboriginal nations of Anaiwan, Awabakal, Biripi, Darkinung, Dunghutti, Geawegal, Gomeroi, Gringai, Kamilaroi, Nganyaywana, Wonnarua and Worimi.

Milestones

  • Feb 22, 2019

    1992

    In July the Federal Government announced funding for ten demonstration Divisions of General Practice.

    In August the Hunter Division of General Practice was formed as the first funded Division in Australia.

  • Feb 22, 2019

    1993

    The Hunter Division of General Practice divided into two separate Divisions: the Hunter Urban Division of General Practice and the Hunter Rural Division of General Practice with the HUDGP growing into a national leader in Divisional and general practitioner activity.

    1998

    HUDGP commences providing IT support services for local GP clinics.

  • Feb 22, 2019

    1999

    The first After Hours Clinic opens in Maitland.

  • Feb 22, 2019

    2003

    GP Access After Hours launches with 4 more after hours clinics.

  • Feb 22, 2019

    2005

    GP Psychology Services launches.

  • Feb 22, 2019

    2008

    HUDGP is rebranded to GP Access after the success of our five GP Access After Hours clinics across the Hunter area.

  • Mar 10, 2023

    2010

    GP Access introduces Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Outreach Worker services, Care Coordination & Supplementary Services (CCSS) as part of the Closing the Gap in Indigenous Health program.

  • Feb 22, 2019

    2011

    GP Access becomes one of the first Medicare Locals to be established in the country, company changes its name to Hunter Primary Care and begins trading as Hunter Urban Medicare Local (HUML).

  • Feb 22, 2019

    2012

    In 2012 HUML is rebranded to Hunter Medicare Local (Hunter ML).

  • Feb 22, 2019

    2013

    headspace Newcastle and the Aged Care Emergency (ACE) program launches. 

    Hunter ML commences a commitment towards a reconciled Australia with a Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) endorsed by Reconciliation Australia.

    2015

    In June the company ceased trading as Hunter Medicare Local due to a Federal Government decision to end Medicare Local funding.

    July 1 2015, Hunter Primary Care begins trading under its own name.

    2016

    The Way Back Support Service commences in collaboration with Beyond Blue.

  • Mar 10, 2023

    2017

    Yudhilidin, Drug & Alcohol Counselling services and Primary Health Care Nurse services launch.

    ChooseABILITY program launches, which is now known as NDIS Support Coordination services.

    2018

    Hunter Primary Care launches new brand with the ‘We Listen. Care. Connect’ tagline.

  • Mar 10, 2023

    2019

    Hunter Psychosocial Support Service, now known as Commonwealth Psychosocial Support (CPS) is introduced.

    2020

    Hunter Primary Care becomes a member of ACON’s Pride in Health & Wellbeing program.

    2021

    NDIS Allied Health and Positive Behaviour Support services launches.

    2022

    Reconciliation Australia endorses Hunter Primary Care's Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan.
