Assisting patients to access Closing the Gap entitlements
The first step in assisting patients to access Closing the Gap health entitlements is to ensure they self-identify to practice staff.
Here are a few suggestions:
- Giving all patients the opportunity to answer the question, “Are you of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin?” in a range of contexts, including when in private, such as the consulting room, instead of just at reception. Patients are not required to provide evidence to support their status;
- Empowering patients to feel comfortable to self-identify by having posters, pamphlets and artworks which show the practice welcomes and respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; and
- By asking our Aboriginal outreach workers to address practice staff about the barriers to primary health care access for their community.
