headspace Newcastle will officially open the doors of its new office expansion on Tuesday 29th October, to coincide with the conclusion of Mental Health Month. Federal Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon MP, will officially open the space.
headspace Newcastle has grown significantly since opening in 2013 and has been fortunate to secure additional funding recently from the Commonwealth government to expand its physical premises and staff headspace Newcastle currently provides a wide range of mental health, substance use, physical health and vocational services to over 1,200 young people each year across the Hunter region.
The new premises will allow headspace Newcastle to increase services and provide a new specialised Youth Suicide and Self Harm program, providing more responsive support to young people at risk of suicide or self-harm.
headspace is the Government’s preferred model of youth mental health service delivery. headspace centres provide early intervention services to 12 to 25 year olds with mild to moderate mental illness, using a holistic approach to promote wellbeing.
Dr. Stephen Hirneth, Clinical Psychologist, Service Manager of headspace Newcastle is looking forward to the new space being opened to the community. “headspace provides an important service to the community, designed for and with young people to help them in their time of need.
One in four young Australians aged 16 to 24 experiences mental illness in any given year, and we need to be able to support these young Australians,” Said Dr Hirneth.
“By providing easy access and resources, headspace wants to show that you never have to be alone in this journey.”
