Summer Finds Confidence and Balance Through Work & Study Program
For fifteen-year-old Summer, landing her first job was an important milestone but it didn’t turn out the way she hoped. Long hours, a tough work environment and the challenge of travelling far from home left her feeling unhappy and unsure about what to do next.
Summer wanted a role that was more flexible around school and in a workplace where she could feel supported, but she wasn’t sure how to take the next step.
That’s where the headspace Newcastle's Work & Study Program came in. With the guidance of her specialist, Summer built a tailored resume and cover letter and began exploring local opportunities. Together, they found a small family-owned restaurant that looked like a great fit. Summer introduced herself to the owner and after a trial shift to showcase her skills, she was quickly offered the role.
Her Vocational Specialist also guided her through resigning from her old job, making the transition much smoother and less stressful.
Now, with a job that’s closer to home, more flexible around school and in a supportive environment, Summer feels more confident and excited about her future.
“I’m so glad I had someone to help me get out of the work situation I was in and get into a new job” Summer said.
The Work & Study Program is designed to support young people like Summer to take positive steps in their education and employment journey, helping them to build confidence, new skills and brighter futures.
