This week we celebrate NAIDOC Week from 3rd to the 10th July.
NAIDOC Week is a time for all Australians to participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. This year's theme 'Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!' calls for systemic change and to keep rallying around our mob, our Elders, our communities. Whether it’s seeking proper environmental, cultural and heritage protections, Constitutional change, a comprehensive process of truth-telling, working towards treaties, or calling out racism—we must do it together. It must be a genuine commitment by all of us to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! and support and secure institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms.
NAIDOC Week is an important celebration for Hunter Primary Care as we are committed to reconciliation, building strong, sustainable and mutually respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and ‘Closing the Gap’ in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ life expectancy. This year we celebrated by attending a number of community events including Awabakal NAIDOC Newcastle, Westlakes NAIDOC, Barkuma's NAIDOC Family Fun Day, Singleton NAIDOC and Karuah NAIDOC. Our staff were also treated to an Acknowledgement of Country from Aunty Cheryl Smith, an Aboriginal dance performance and cultural workshops with Richard 'Roo' Faulkner and the team from Winangay Dreaming as well as a yummy lunch featuring bush tucker ingredients from Numa Ngarra.
