Supporting behaviour change to reduce or eliminate behaviours of concern

As a registered NDIS provider, Hunter Primary Care can provide you with an experienced behaviour support practitioner to assist in understanding why inappropriate or challenging behaviours are being used, and what can be done to build capacity in a safe, enjoyable environment.

How does it work?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a strengths based, person-centred approach to support behaviour change to reduce or eliminate behaviours of concern. PBS can improve your quality of life, teach you adaptive and functional skills, and reduce or eliminate restrictive practices where possible.

We use a collaborative approach in getting to know you and your supports through interviews, observations, formalised data and assessments to develop a robust picture of the functions of the behaviours of concern. This includes what is working well, and what needs to be improved or changed to promote more positive outcomes.

As part of the service, an individualised and high quality Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP) is developed to provide guidance for support staff on how best to support you and to give individualised strategies to improve capacity and quality of life long term. Support teams are trained in the implementation of the plan to ensure consistent and high quality support to help best meet your needs.

Am I eligible?

PBS is ideal for NDIS participants who present any behaviours of concern that impact their life and ability to obtain meaningful support. These behaviours may include aggression, withdrawal, food refusal, wandering etc. These behaviours, which are complex, unpredictable or difficult to understand, may be caused by a mismatch in your social or physical environment and your ability to navigate that environment. Sometimes it is the environment that needs changing, sometimes you need new skills.

PBS is also required when there is a need to assess if any restrictive practice is in place, with the goal to reduce or eliminate these practices, or regulate restrictive practices in accordance with NDIS Commission guidelines.

Our services are funded under the following supports:

  • Capacity Building: Improved Relationships - Specialist Behavioural Intervention Support, and/or
  • Capacity Building: Improved Relationships - Behaviour Management Plan including Training in Behaviour Management Strategies.
