A recent media release from the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission has highlighted a critical safety focus across the disability sector: preventing choking and improving safe mealtime practices for NDIS participants.

Following nationwide mealtime safety checks, the Commission identified concerns where safe mealtime and dysphagia (swallowing difficulty) supports were not consistently implemented. As a result, the regulator is increasing its focus on providers to ensure high-risk health concerns are properly managed.

For participants living with neurological conditions, developmental disability, intellectual disability, or complex health needs, mealtimes can present increased risks. However, with the right allied health support, many of these risks are preventable.

Why Mealtime Safety Matters

Choking and aspiration are serious health risks, but they are often linked to preventable factors such as:

  • Inconsistent implementation of texture-modified diets
  • Lack of staff training or understanding of mealtime plans
  • Poor communication between providers
  • Inadequate monitoring of nutritional intake.

The Commission’s findings reinforce the importance of coordinated, proactive allied health involvement — including dietitian support — to reduce these risks.

The Role of Dietitians in Supporting Participant Safety

Accredited Practising Dietitians play a key role in supporting safe and nutritionally adequate mealtimes. Dietitian involvement can include:

  • Comprehensive nutrition assessment
  • Guidance on texture-modified diets in collaboration with speech pathologists
  • Ensuring nutritional adequacy when texture modifications are required
  • Supporting safe meal planning and implementation
  • Training and educating families, carers and support workers
  • Monitoring weight, hydration and overall health.

When supports are clearly implemented and regularly reviewed, participants are safer and families have greater confidence in care provision.

Proactive Health Support, Not Reactive Crisis Management

Beyond choking prevention, dietitian services support:

  • Improved energy and daily functioning
  • Healthy weight management
  • Chronic disease risk reduction
  • Reduced hospital presentations
  • Greater independence and participation.

Early referral allows participants to receive structured monitoring and preventative support, rather than waiting for complications to arise.
