Hunter Primary Care has launched its Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2026–2029, reaffirming the organisation’s long-standing commitment to reconciliation and improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The RAP was launched on Close the Gap Day, a national day of awareness highlighting the importance of achieving health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Hunter Primary Care has been committed to reconciliation since signing a Statement of Commitment with Reconciliation Australia in 2013. Since then, the organisation has continued to strengthen relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, partners and staff.

The new Stretch RAP builds on this journey, with a stronger focus on engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders and embedding co-design in service development. Chief Executive Officer Keith Drinkwater said the RAP reflects Hunter Primary Care’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation and health equity.

“Close the Gap Day reminds us that improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples requires sustained effort and partnership. Our Stretch RAP outlines the actions we will take to strengthen relationships, support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and ensure our services continue to respond to the needs of community.”

The RAP includes actions across four focus areas: Relationships, Respect, Opportunities and Governance and builds on the achievements of the organisation’s previous Stretch RAP.

Throughout this period, Hunter Primary Care has delivered a range of initiatives, including strengthening partnerships with Aboriginal organisations, supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce development and creating culturally meaningful spaces such as To-ròl, a wellbeing place for healing and connection.

The new RAP will guide Hunter Primary Care’s reconciliation efforts through to 2029 and support continued progress toward improved health outcomes and reconciliation across the Hunter region.
